You probably know that I made the decision to become (mostly) a vegetarian last July. It wasn't something I just thought I'd try. It was something that I felt that I had to do.
From July 24 through November 19, I did not have one piece of meat. No beef, pork, poultry or fish. I really wanted to see if I could do it and I did.
The week of Thanksgiving, I ate some chicken and turkey and I'm fine with that. (I also ate some pork, which I am not proud of.) Now that I've done it, I don't plan on eating any meat again until my birthday in February when I will have a hamburger.
Overall it hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be. It does get tricky to figure out things to eat - especially at restaurants - but since I'm not a full vegan, I can get stuff like chile rellenos or even an egg white omelette (without the meat.)
Having said that, my self control was really tested when I took my wife's family to Rodizio Grill on Saturday. For those of you that don't know about Rodizio, it's a Brazilian place where guys bring large skewers of meat to your table and you can eat as much as you can.
They also have a huge salad bar with all kinds of stuff that isn't salad, so I figure I would get the salad bar and be fine.
That was until a skewer of garlic-crusted beef tenderloin was brought to the table for the rest of the family.
Holy cow (HA!), the smell of it alone was enough to make me forget any crazy notion of vegetarianism.
The skewer of beef left the table and I felt strong again.
And then came the sausage, spicy chicken, turkey wrapped in bacon and pot roast.
What was I thinking? Did I really believe that I could tempt myself like this? I know I'm not that strong, yet for some reason I threw myself into the front lines of this battle.
Meanwhile, I spent a lot of my time trying out new things from the salad bar that I never ate before because I always wanted to save enough room for meat: hearts of palm soup, pineapple & coconut cole slaw, a variety
of salads.
Plus all the polenta & pao de queijo that I could eat.
I am happy to say that I walked out of Rodizio without eating one piece of meat.
Maybe I am much stronger than I think.
