I think it's fair to say that each of us has something that influenced our decision to get healthy. It may be a mirror, a scale, a family member or even an old article of clothing that you want to wear again.
For me, it was a lot of things, but I would say that my wife and kids are my biggest inspiration. I want to be around for enough years to see my kids graduate, get married, have children. I want to celebrate milestone anniversaries with my wife.
A few years back, my dad had a quadruple bypass. As I was standing in the hospital with my siblings - all of which have done various things to lose weight - I come to the realization that I could easily be the first one to die, even though I am the youngest. That was event that opened my eyes to my own health and really caused me to kick it into gear.
Not long after that, I happened to be flipping through TV channels and came upon an infomercial for something called P90X. (I can count on one hand the amount of times I've sat down and watched TV in the past couple of years, so this was almost a sign to me.)
After watching the entire infomercial - another rare thing - I realized that I could not afford P90X, but it did motivate me to get off the couch and move. (If the infomercial has that effect, imagine what the actual workout can do.)
I still do not own P90X, nor have I done the workout in it's entirety. (One of my friends loaned me the DVDs and I've done a few of them.) But I can tell you, that P90X was a the last influential push that I needed to going. And I am truly grateful for that. (Once I found out that P90X was way out of my budget, I went for what I call "the poor man's version" called Supreme 90. I like it and it only costs, at most, about $20 at places like Big 5 or Ross.)
