When people say they have a busy life, I can totally relate.
My wife & I have five kids, the oldest being twelve and the youngest is one. Each child has various things to do every day and night that keeps my wife & I on our toes.
My full-time job takes up the biggest part of my life. I work Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Driving to work takes about 20 minutes on a good day, of which there are very few. I average about an hour on the road round-trip every day.
Meanwhile, I go to school full-time at Western Governors University. The classes are all online, which is good and bad. I can do it on my own time, but I have to find and make the time to do it. (Usually early in the morning, before anyone is awake.)
I also own my own DJ business, which is sporadic, but it keeps me hopping mostly on weekends.
Oh yeah, I have a calling in my church which takes up most of Sunday, plus one or two nights a week.
I barely have time to put on deodorant every day, let alone exercise.
Unfortunately, exercise is always the first thing to be postponed when life gets too busy. After all, I can't quit my job, nor can I just ignore homework. (Trust me, I've tried.) I guess I could try to streamline things by sleeping in my clothes or taking a sponge bath in the car as I drive to work, but even then, I would try to put something else in those extra minutes that allows.
The point is, if it's important, you will have to make the time for exercise. For me, I like getting up and working out as early as possible. It gives me a nice jump start on the day.
But that may not be what's best for you. Find something that works for you and stick to it.
Maybe you need to wake up a half an hour earlier. Maybe you need to stop watching reruns of "Seinfeld". (Up until last week, that is the only TV I watched. Now I try to go to bed at 10:00, so I can get up earlier to do homework and exercise.)
Other ways that you could fit exercise into your day:

Other ways that you could fit exercise into your day:
- Park your car at the other end of the parking lot
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Take a walk around your building during lunch
- Watch your TV shows or read your books while on the elliptical or the treadmill
- See how many push-ups, sit-ups &/or jumping jacks you could during commercials (I realize most people use TiVo-type products to delete commercials, but in an average hour show, the commercials will give you about 15-20 minutes to work out.)
- Walk - either by yourself, with your spouse or family - after dinner
- Take the kids to the park
There are many other ways you can get 30 minutes of exercise in every day. (That should be the minimum that you do.) The important thing is, just do it. You will feel better and you will stop making excuses.
I think you are amazing. I have a hard time finding time to work out and I don't work or go to school. Plus I only have two kids. I did go for a walk with my kids after reading this. So thanks for the motivation :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your great example. I need to do this too.
