Free of Fast Food

At the beginning of the year, I made a lot of goals that I wanted to keep.  Some, I knew, would stick.  Others, not so much.

One of those that has stuck is my goal to not eat fast food.

Not only that, but with the exception of going out with my wife to Zupa's a few weeks ago, I haven't eaten at any restaurant this year.  (That will change tomorrow when one of our salespeople takes us out to lunch to Joe Morley's Barbecue...where I will order a salad.)

There are a couple of reasons that I made this goal.  The first being for health reasons, of course.  Not only does it help me eat better, it also helps me with another one of my goals: no soda.  (My brain is wired to have soda whenever I go out to eat, so I figured if I don't go out, I won't drink soda.)

The second reason I made the decision to not eat fast food is financial.  I figured that last year I ate out about once a week.  (I would usually treat myself to a Supersonic Breakfast Burrito meal...without the meat...on Fridays.)  On the average, each meal cost me $5, which means that I easily spent around $300 last year on fast food alone.

I know that may not seem a lot, but when you have a wife and five kids to support on a radio salary, every dollar counts.

Now, I know that some of you are saying, "But, Eric, you have to eat."

That is true, I do have to eat, but I don't need to eat at Sonic.

At the risk of sounding fanatical here, let's compare my Supersonic Breakfast Burrito meal and my breakfast this morning.

The Supersonic Breakfast Burrito Meal (burrito, large tots, Route 44 Fanta Orange with vanilla) contains almost 1600 calories, 60 grams of fat and nearly 110 grams of sugar!

For one meal!  (Is it any wonder that I was 100 pounds overweight?)

This morning, I had a green smoothie.  (Spinach, banana, mango, pineapple, papaya, protein powder, flaxseed.)  It cost me less than $1.00 to make and only had about 400 calories.  (Plus three full servings of fruits & vegetables and Omega 3 from the flax.)

And believe it or not, the smoothie was just as good - and filling - as a breakfast burrito.  (Granted, they are two totally different flavors, but it's not like I'm drinking something I absolutely hate.)

That, by itself, makes me never want to eat fast food again.

Heck, this may be easier than I thought it ever would be.
